William (Joe)'s Story

I'm a native of San Diego, grew up in the El Cerrito neighborhood, attended Andrew Jackson Elementary School, Horace Mann Junior High School,and Crawford High School. Studied trumpet with David Greeno and Donald Phillips of the San Diego Symphony and John Clyman of Los Angeles. At home in all genres of music, I've performed with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, La Jolla Playhouse, Starlight Theatre, Old Globe, City Ballet of San Diego, Grand Pacific Band, Young Audiences, Buddy Blue, Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, and various other Jazz, Latin, R&B, Funk, and Soul ensembles from Ragtime to the Temptations Back-up Band. xperimental Music from the University of California San Diego. I taught instrumental music in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District from 1972 to 2010. I've been married since 1967 to Laurel Ruth Sloan, daughter of Salvation Army officers Brigadier and Mrs. Howard Sloan. We have two sons and six grandchildren. Retired from La Mesa Middle School June 19, 2010 after teaching 38 years of instrumental music. Called back March 2014 to finish out the year at La Mesa Middle School and "repair" after my successor was "early retired". August 2014, began teaching Instrumental Music at Flying Hills Elementary School (three days a week) until 2023. I'm now "retired" Continuing to concentrate on trumpet performance...all styles, and occasional weekends with fellow Colt John Gunderson's band, "The Shenanigans". " Hike two days a week with experienced in-shape guys my age. Lots of time with grandkids (6) and wife (1) It's all good !
